Judging.
Having watched HUNDREDS of contests over 40 years, I thought you guys got hosed at Valley last year. As a Iowan I felt the one Judge that scored you so low was wrong and evidently had a ax to grind. However, Des Moines Dowling Catholic got absolutley molested at Eden Prairie last year.Their drum line Iowa's biggest (41) and best by far was 2nd to a line with two snares and one tenor. With due respect to all participants big and small that Judge was shameful. I don't know if Irondale being the great sports they are and a band we all would aspire to be like will come back to Valley, but we wouldn't blame you if you didn't. Dowling is going to Eastview this year dispite the disapointment in that judge and hopes it's a good time for all. See you soon. Thank You for what you do for this art-form.
Judging-part 2
This is a rebuttal for the previous post. I love the whole "judging game". I was at that show and don't remember exactly who the 2 snare and one tenor group was, but I do remember Dowling. They were real big and real loud. However, I don't remember ever hearing that size and a decibel meter are used for judging. I do know that the percussion aspect in Minnesota is light years ahead of most of our neighboring states in regard to writing, clarity, technical progiciency and musicality. In the marching band world, clean and musical super-cedes big and thick.
Dowling had a fun show. It was exciting, but in my opinion, not played very well;especially their front line
Judging is a subjective activity, and after watching HUNDREDS of contests over 40 years you should know that, Do you know who that judge was? Do you know his credentials, background, integrity? Shame on you for singling that person out.
I give you kudos for recognizing the Irondale program. They are a class organization with a smaller drumline that plays the game very well.
I hope to make it to the Eastview show (if I am in town)and see all the groups. I wish Dowling the best, and hope if you are there that you will look at the big picture.........
